MADURA ISLAND

Madura is the name of the island which lies east of East Java Sea. Madura Island of magnitude less than 5250 km2 (smaller than the island of Bali), with a population of around 4 million people.

ADMINISTRATION

Madura is divided into four districts, namely :

• Bangkalan
• Sampang
• Pamekasan
• Sumenep

This island including the East Java province and has the number of motor vehicles alone, the "M".

History

Politically, Madura over the centuries has become subordinate to regional authority based in Java. Around the year 900-1500, the island is under the influence of the east Javanese Hindu kingdom of power like Kediri, Singhasari, and Majapahit. In between the years 1500 and 1624, the rulers of Madura to some extent dependent on the Islamic kingdoms in the north coast of Java, like Demak, Gresik, and Surabaya. In 1624, Madura conquered by Mataram. After that, in the first half of the eighteenth century Madura under Dutch colonial rule (from 1882), first by the VOC, then by the Dutch East Indies government. At the time of the division of the province in the 1920s, became part of Madura, East Java province.

ECONOMY

Overall, Madura, including one of the rural poor in East Java province. Unlike Java, Madura land less fertile enough to be a place of agriculture. Others are limited economic opportunities has resulted in unemployment and poverty. These factors have resulted in long-term emigration from Madura so many people today do not live Madurese in Madura. Madurese population, including participants of the transmigration program ever.
Subsistence agriculture (small scale for survival) is the main economic activity. Maize and cassava are the main cultivation crops in subsistence farming in Madura, scattered in many small land. Cattle are also an important part of agricultural economy in this island, and provide additional income for farm families is important for activities other than cattle karapan. Small-scale fisheries are also important in the subsistence economy there.
Plants most commercial cultivation in Madura is tobacco. Land on the island of Madura is helping make important producer of tobacco and cloves for the domestic cigarette industry. Since the Dutch colonial era, Madura has also been a major producer and exporter of salt.
Bangkalan located at the western end of Madura has undergone industrialization since the 1980s. This area is easily accessible from Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city, and thus plays a suburb for commuters to Surabaya, and as an industrial location and the services needed, close to Surabaya.Suramadu the old bridge was planned and is now under construction is expected to increase the interaction area with regional economic Bangkalan.

MADURESE CULTURE

Mantan Mang Leter Bung Leter

Mantan Mang Leter Bung Leter is one of the ancient traditions of indigenous madurese. The emphasis lies on one of a series of weddings. Namely, when the groom was escorted by all his relatives to the residence of the bride with a dozen horse-drawn carriage ride in single file. Aside from being a manifestation penganugrahan blessing of all family parties, the procession is also contains a sense of togetherness and evidence of willingness to release all the groom's family to the bride's family.

Tari Tandak is one of the arts that originated from the Madurese. Sinden is an icon of dance tandak. sinden in doing a dance done by a man who is an opponent of tarianya. this dance is accompanied by the sound of gamelan music.
Sinden will bring a song (ngejung) which is usually a poem with a satiric purpose of his opponent.

Kolla Langgundih

Location : Bangkalan

Such ponds where the water comes from natural springs. Kolla is located in the hamlet village Langgundih Kramat Bangkalan City district that has a high religious value. Because it is believed to be relics of Kiai Asror, grandfather of the legendary scholar Bangkalan Syaichona Moh. Cholil.
It is said that the story, langgundih springs emerged from the wand which is plugged Asror Kiai. Amazingly, these springs never dry despite being at the peak of the dry season. Moreover, although fresh water is located only a few dozen meters from the sea shore of Java.
