MADURA ISLAND

Madura is the name of the island which lies east of East Java Sea. Madura Island of magnitude less than 5250 km2 (smaller than the island of Bali), with a population of around 4 million people.

ADMINISTRATION

Madura is divided into four districts, namely :

  • Bangkalan
  • Sampang
  • Pamekasan
  • Sumenep

History

Politically, Madura over the centuries has become subordinate to regional authority based in Java. Around the year 900-1500, the island is under the influence of the east Javanese Hindu kingdom of power like Kediri, Singhasari, and Majapahit. In between the years 1500 and 1624, the rulers of Madura to some extent dependent on the Islamic kingdoms in the north coast of Java, like Demak, Gresik, and Surabaya. In 1624, Madura conquered by Mataram. After that, in the first half of the eighteenth century Madura under Dutch colonial rule (from 1882), first by the VOC, then by the Dutch East Indies government. At the time of the division of the province in the 1920s, became part of Madura, East Java province.

ECONOMY

Bangkalan located at the western end of Madura has undergone industrialization since the 1980s. MADURESE CULTURE

Mantan Mang Leter Bung Leter

Mantan Mang Leter Bung Leter is one of the ancient traditions of indigenous madurese. The emphasis lies on one of a series of weddings. Namely, when the groom was escorted by all his relatives to the residence of the bride with a dozen horse-drawn carriage ride in single file. Kolla Langgundih

Location : Bangkalan

Such ponds where the water comes from natural springs. Kolla is located in the hamlet village Langgundih Kramat Bangkalan City district that has a high religious value. Because it is believed to be relics of Kiai Asror, grandfather of the legendary scholar Bangkalan Syaichona Moh. Cholil.
It is said that the story, langgundih springs emerged from the wand which is plugged Asror Kiai. Amazingly, these springs never dry despite being at the peak of the dry season. Moreover, although fresh water is located only a few dozen meters from the sea shore of Java.
